Adjust Brightness on Your Windows 10 laptop

Windows 10 still has a lot of issues to be fixed in future updates, and some of them can really be annoying, especially for laptop users. In today’s article, we are going to cover a few easy methods for fixing brightness-related problems.

First of all, you must realize that there could be multiple reasons causing the abnormal behavior of color on your screen. For instance, your display drivers might not be installed, or video card driver is not working properly. Sometimes third-party software can also cause troubles of this nature.

Method #1: enable drivers

Your monitor may be physically connected and fully functioning, but if your display drivers are not okay, you might have problems. There are two conditions defining drivers “not okay” state in this particular case: they are disabled or installed with errors. In order to find out the root of the problem, you should check either Windows Notification center or display settings. If the brightness adjustment button (tile) and brightness slider are inactive – it is a first sign of the problem. From here you must deduce what causing it – disabled or unofficial video card drivers or display drivers. Here is what you need to do:

  • Press Win+S and type Device Manager in the search bar to appear (or press Win+X and select it from the list).
  • Run Device Manager.
  • Find the “Monitors” menu and look for the “Generic PnP Monitor.”
  • If the driver is marked with a grey arrow, that means it is disabled. Open a context menu and activate it.
  • If you didn’t find anything suspicious in the “Monitor” section, go to the “Display Adapter” menu and check video card drivers there.

If you find any driver-related problems, we recommend you to update drivers manually by downloading them from the official website of the laptop/component manufacturer. If you don’t have enough time or not sure how it is done, you can try third-party programs for automatic driver installation such as RocketFixer.

Method #2: switch to default drivers

Another possible cause of the brightness adjustment problem is installed software remote access. Such programs often apply their own display drivers automatically to improve connection and increase transmission speed.

  • Open Display Manager and right-click on your monitor to open a context menu where you need to click “Update Driver Software.”
  • In the next menu click “Browse my computer for driver software.”
  • A new window will appear where you need to select “Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.”
  • You will see a list of installed drivers on your computer. You need to select “Generic PnP Monitor” and click “Next.”
  • The system will initiate the driver installation. You will see a notification when it is complete.

Method #3: download dedicated software

Another possible scenario when you have active brightness adjustment in the settings menu but hotkeys are not working. This means that you probably don’t have official laptop software developed by the manufacturer specifically for your device. You should check the manufacturer’s website and download the latest version of that software.

For HP laptops you are going to need “HP Software Framework,” “HP Power Manager,” and “HP UEFI Support Environment.”

For Lenovo laptops, it would be “Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 10″.

If you have an ASUS laptop, download “ATK Hotkey Utility” and “ATKACPI.”

Sony Vaio owners will need “Sony Notebook Utilities” software and just be sure – “Sony Firmware Extension.”

In the case with Dell laptops, just one “QuickSet” will be enough.

Remember that it is also possible that you have the proper software and it is functioning, but you might be pressing the wrong key combination and not getting the expected outcome. Different laptop models have different hotkeys, so you should double-check the hotkeys list for your device before (re)installing dedicated software.

As you see, the main problem with brightness adjustment not working is mostly about disabled or faulty drivers. That can be fixed easily in a matter of minutes.
