How to Use uTorrent (Guide With Picture)

uTorrent is a fairly easy-to-use client for downloading Torrent files. However, it still has dozens of features to explore, both basic and advanced.

This post is a complete rundown on how to use uTorrent – where and how to get the client, how to start a torrent download, how to manage the list of running downloads, and so on.

Downloading uTorrent

Step 1. Go to the uTorrent official website

You can find a uTorrent client at the program’s official website. There are both a free and a paid version – the latter is ad-free, includes the streaming-while-downloading feature as well as a built-in format converter.

Step 2. Download Utorrent.exe file

As a first time user, you might want to consider going by with the free version of the tool. In order to start the download, click on Download uTorrent Classic.

Step 3. Install the program

The executable file will be automatically downloaded from the uTorrent web page. Double tap on it to open the setup client. From that point forward, follow the installation instructions. Read the Terms and Services agreement and press ‘I Accept’ to proceed with the process.

At a certain point, you’ll be offered to install the WebDiscover browser. Feel free to decline the proposal in case you don’t want to clutter the PC with unneeded apps. When the installation is over, click ‘Finish’ to exit the client and start the program.

Looking for torrents

While there are clients that offer a built-in torrent search engine, uTorrent is not one of those. After you have installed utorrent, download torrent files from the web. There are a few ways to go about this.

1. Type [filename] torrent in Google Search. The websites in the rankings might have a torrent client to download a movie, program, or a PC game you’re looking for. Keep in mind, however, that files from unknown sources can be infected with viruses or malware – downloading them is a move at your own risk.

2. Use torrent file search engines. uTorrent will offer you to download BitTorrent – there, you’ll see listings with torrent clients for movies, music, apps, and other files. Other popular options include:

  • Toorgle;
  • TorrentSeeker;
  • Pirate Bay;
  • ExtraTorrent.

After downloading a file in the .torrent format, double-click on it. The uTorrent window will open automatically.

Tweaking the download settings

In the tab, you’ll see a range of settings determining where the download will be saved, how the file will be called, all the files the folder contains, and so on. Let’s examine the settings closer:

  • Save in. Here, a user can change the file path (the default one is usually C/Users/Username/Downloads).
  • Name – you’ll be able to change the default file name for a custom one. This way, it’ll be easier to find a download on the hard drive.
  • Skip hash check. Before you decide whether you want uTorrent to hash-check your download, it’s important to understand why the feature is important. A hash check is essentially a process of assigning a digital fingerprint to the file that would keep track of all changes made to the file. In most cases, a hash check is recommended as it prevents files from corruption. The truth is, however, that uTorrent hash checks are quite slow and can result in system shutdowns – that’s why users tend to skip hash checks for big or poorly seeded torrents.

Start the torrent. The program ticks this box automatically – this feature stands for the automatic start of the torrent.

Label. The labeling feature is highly useful as it allows you to sort through multiple downloads and navigate them faster. In the drop-down menu, you’ll see the list of labels you have created. Users can create a new label as well and assign it to a download.

Add to the top of the queue. By disabling this feature, a user sorts all downloads by their names in the alphabetic order. If you leave the checkbox ticked, the download you’re about to start will be displayed at the top of the queue.

In order to start a download, click the ‘Start Torrent’ button. You’ll be able to see the file size, the status of the download, the downloading speed, and the amount of time left.

Tips on optimizing uTorrent speed

In case you’re not fully satisfied with the performance of the uTorrent client, tweaking the settings could be a solid option. Here are a few tried-and-true hacks that are known to improve the running speed of the client and improve the overall user experience.

1. Optimize the queueing settings

While uTorrent allows users to download an unlimited number of torrents at the same time, it’s worth keeping in mind that each of them takes a part of the bandwidth – thus, the downloading speed would fall as the load increases.

By choosing Options -> Preferences -> Queueing, you’ll be able to put the limit on the number of downloads the program can run simultaneously.

2. Removing ads

While a fairly common way to get rid of uTorrent ads is to get a paid version, the good news is you’ll be able to do that manually in the free client as well. In order to do this, go to Options -> Preferences -> Advanced and change the value of the ‘offers.sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled’ from ‘True’ to ‘False’.

3. Limiting the data use

In case you connection provider sets a data limit, being able to limit the number of GBs the program can download will come in handy. In order to do this, go to ‘Preferences’ and select ‘Transfer Cap’. Here, you’ll be able to select the time period and the number of GBs that can be downloaded.

4. Optimizing drive cache settings

uTorrent allows users to optimize the number of reads and writes on the hard drive. By following the ‘Preferences’ -> ‘Advanced’ -> ‘Disk Cache’ path, you’ll be able to manually set the cache size. In order to do it, select ‘Override automatic cache size and specify the size manually’ and change the value to 1800.

uTorrent is a torrent client with a really broad range of features. Using uTorrent doesn’t put a noticeable strain on the system’s performance – that’s why the client is performing consistently on low-end devices.

It has a lot of room for optimization, almost any feature can be reconfigured to a user’s preferences. Getting around the platform is fairly easy as there’s a big community of active users to answer your questions.
