This error is known to many users who own HP laptops and decided to install Windows 10 1809 October 2018 Update. HP is one of the leading laptop manufacturers today, so we decided to write a short guide to explain how to deal with this error. This is the blue screen of death type of error, which usually happens after installing first updates – KB4462919 and KB4464330. The BSoD with the WDF_VIOLATION message is caused by the HpqKbFiltr.sys driver.
Microsoft was informed immediately after the update about this problem and released a hotfix. However, you need to start Windows to install it, which can be a problem. In this article, we will explain how to fix the blue screen of death HpqKbFiltr.sys after updating Windows 10 on HP laptops.
How to fix the WDF_VIOLATION HpqKbFiltr.sys failure
First, you must know what causes the problem. In this case, the HP keyboard driver is to blame, or rather its incompatibility with the new version of Windows. In order to fix the error, you need to follow these steps:
- You need to reboot your computer on the blue screen of death several times in a row to trigger the system repair (if you cannot get to the system repair menu, read the paragraph with additional information at the end of this guide).
- When the menu with advanced startup option is up, select “Troubleshoot” – “Advanced options” – “Command Prompt.” In the Command Prompt window, you need to type the following command: ren C:\Windows\System32\drivers\HpqKbFiltr.sys HpqKbFiltr.old
- Hit Enter.
- Close Command Prompt.
- Go back to the first screen and select “Turn off your PC.”
After completing the last step, turn on your computer – it should boot without any problems this time. From your desktop go to the Start menu and open Settings. In the Settings menu, you need to click “Update and Security” to get to the Windows Update section. There you will need to check available updates and install the KB4468304 update (HP Keyboard Filter Driver for Windows 10 1803 and 1809).
If Windows Update service cannot find this update automatically, you will have to download and install it manually. It can be found in the Windows update catalog – https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4468304. This update features a new HpqKbFiltr.sys driver for keyboards on HP laptops. This will neutralize the WDF_VIOLATION HpqKbFiltr.sys error.
If you cannot trigger the system repair the way we described in the first step above, you can try another method. It requires a bootable USB flash drive with any version of Windows on it (it can be even Windows 8 or Windows 7). You can use this flash drive to activate Windows Setup. After selecting language, time, currency format, and input method, you will see the menu with the “Repair your computer” option. Just like in the screenshot below. Click it to get to the next menu, where you can select Command Prompt and continue from the second step.
Keep in mind that sometimes during this repair procedure that involves using a flash drive, the letter of your main system disk might not always be “C.” In order to find out the actual letter of your system disk, you need to use two commands one by one: diskpart, and then – list volume. They will show you a list of all partitions so that you can confirm the letter of the needed one. When it is done, just type exit, hit enter, and continue with the third step selecting the corresponding letter.
